Westhora Stepping Down from Wylie ISD Board, Moving Out of State
Veteran Wylie ISD school board member Tom Westhora has announced he will step down from his seat on the Wylie ISD Board of Trustees effective July 1. He has accepted a job in Idaho, closer to family, and they will be moving this summer. Mr. Westhora, who holds the Place 1 seat, was first elected in 2011 and re-elected in 2014. His term expires this November.
“It has been my honor to serve this school district and our community for the past seven years,” said Mr. Westhora. “I am proud of the work this Board has done to make Wylie ISD a destination district. I ran for Trustee to help each student improve their success for life after high school and I feel completely satisfied that we have paved the way. I will be forever grateful for all that Wylie ISD has done for my family, and all the families it serves.”
During his time on the Board Westhora served on the several committees, including:
- Board Policy and Procedures
- Dress Code
- City and School Partnerships (Chairman)
- Parents as Partners
- Birmingham Memorial Land Board Trust
Both he and his wife, Katie, are graduates of the district’s CLAAS (Creating Leaders and Advocates for Schools) program and are active in the PTA. They currently have three children in the Wylie ISD, and a 2017 WHS graduate.
“Tom will be missed by this Board. He always made sure the parent’s perspective was included in any discussion,” said Mitch Herzog, President of the Wylie ISD Board of Trustees. “His family was committed to Wylie ISD on so many levels. From their kid’s involvement at school to Tom and Katie’s service to their community, they have certainly left their mark here.”
The Place 1 seat will remain vacant until the November election.
