AHMO Iron Takes Second in State Powerlifting Meet

WHS AHMO Iron Powerlifting team at 2021 state competition

As a team, the team of 16 state qualifiers narrowly missed a state championship by just 3 points. They fought hard for every pound at every lifting platform. Of the 16 State Qualifiers, 15 of them had a top 10 finish in the state. These girls gained invaluable experience and are ready to bring home a State Championship for Wylie High School next year.

Additionally, the team walked away with one State Champion and a couple of State Records. Here are the overall results:

Senior Kaylan Ghafoor:

  • State Champion
  • 1st in the 123lb class with a total of 895lbs
  • Outstanding Deadlift award for the lightweight platforms
  • Set a new State Record of a 185lb Bench Press in the 123lb class

Senior Tyler Hanson:

  • 2nd Place in the 132lb class with a total of 945lbs
  • Outstanding Bench Press award for the lightweight platforms
  • Set a new State Record of a 265lb Bench Press in the 132lb class

Sophomore Aya Laaziz: 2nd Place in the 114lb class with a total of 685lbs

Junior Katie Nguyen: 3rd Place in the 259lb class with a total of 1045lbs

Sophomore Kendall Nalley: 4th Place in the 181lb class with a total of 825lbs

Sophomore Avery Quiroga: 5th Place in the 105lb class with a total of 625lb

Sophomore Briana Webb: 6th Place in the 259 class with a total of 910lbs

Junior Evelyn Bush: 6th Place in the 97lb class with a total of 530lb

Freshman Emily Phillips: 6th Place in the 165lb class with a total of 870lbs

Sophomore Naomi Williams: 6th Place in the 132lb class with a total of 780lbs

Sophomore Eden Yeneneh: 8th Place in the 132lb class with a total of 765lbs

Freshman Alexis Mitchell: 8th Place in the 97lb class with a total of 525lb

Senior Hannah Ray: 9th Place in the 123lb class with a total of 735lb

Senior Saniah Rivera: 10th Place in the 123lb class with a total of 725lb

Sophomore Maddie Wethington: 10th Place in the 132lb class with a total of 750lbs
