The Wylie ISD is proud to announce that Joel Zuniga has been named the new head coach of the Wylie High School Lady Pirates Basketball team. Coach Zuniga has a proven record of success in the classroom and on the court. He will replace Reggie Bibb at the conclusion of this season.
“Being selected to take over the Lady Pirates basketball program is an honor and a privilege,” said Coach Zuniga. “Coach Bibb has done a great job and I hope to make this transition seamless by getting to know the girls as they play throughout their season, and by working with the younger players at Cooper and McMillan. I’ve heard so many great things about Virdie Montgomery, Bill Howard, and the rest of the Pirate staff. I’m excited to get over there and get started.”
Zuniga began his career in Tulsa in 1997 where he led the Nathan Hale High School boys’ team to the state tournament. He spent two years in the college ranks leading Northeastern State University to a conference title and the 2003 NCAA Division II National Championship while posting an NCAA-leading 60-5 overall record. He moved to Texas, coaching in Red Oak ISD and Fort Worth ISD before joining Wylie ISD in 2012. He has served as a teacher and coach at Wylie East High School, taking the girl’s program there from 10-20 to 25-7 in just two seasons. He spent two years in private business before returning to WEHS this year to serve as the assistant golf coach.
Zuniga earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degree from Northeastern State University (OK.)
