Groves Kindergarteners Zoom Over to Germany

12/6/2023

Did you know that Dec. 6 is St. Nicholas Day in Germany?

Thanks to Groves kindergarten teacher Lauren Lazorko's connections, kindergartners learned about this and other traditional holiday celebrations in Germany on a Zoom call.

Students listened as Lazorko's friend, Miss Jenny, whom she once taught with in Germany, zoomed with them from her classroom in Germany.

"It's 5:30 in Germany while it's 10:30 a.m. here,” Lazorko said. “Miss Jenny's Wednesday is almost over, while ours is just getting started!"

When a kindergartener asked Miss Jenny if it was cold in Germany, she took them outside (on the Zoom call) with her to show them snow on the ground outside of her school.

Miss Jenny also explained to the students how children in Germany put their shoes outside of their front doors for St. Nicholas to fill with gifts. So the kindergarteners put this custom to the test by leaving their shoes outside of their classroom door.

The students were surprised to find their shoes filled with special sweet treats while they made gingerbread houses.

"St. Nicholas must have put candy canes in your shoes because we zoomed with someone all the way across the world in Germany!" Lazorko told her class.

"This is the best day in my life!" kindergartener Dustin said.
