Students Offer Free Math Tutoring

9/22/2023

26 students + 9 tutors = a formula for success! Wylie Math Tutoring is a free tutoring service Wednesday evenings at the Rita Smith Public Library that pairs volunteer student tutors with students seeking help.

The program is open to any third through 12th grade Wylie ISD student needing a little assistance with math. Even students from neighboring districts reap the benefits.

Wylie East sophomores Charlotte Duckworth and Makayla Beamer organized the free tutoring program this year.

“Last week we even had a kid from Plano and another one from Garland ISD,” Beamer said. “We don’t turn anyone who needs help away.”

Tutors consist of Wylie ISD eighth-12th grade students volunteering in exchange for service hours.

Wylie East sophomore Audrey Jones is earning service hours for PTSA by tutoring, but she said she volunteers because she loves to help others.

“When I was younger and struggled with homework, there was no one to help me like this,” Jones said. “I’ve always been a math kid and I like being able to help. I feel proud about the little things, like when they don't understand at first, then when they leave here, they know they can do it.”

Wylie High senior Lizzie Buresh isn’t currently enrolled in a math class; however, she still loves to tutor for Wylie Math Tutoring.

“Math always came easy to me,” Buresh said. “So why not share that with everybody else?”

Wylie East freshman Aaliya Ruhil’s is a new tutor for Wylie Math Tutoring.

“I like to work with the younger kids,” Ruhil said. “They are so cute and when you work with them, they are more engaging.”

She recently tutored third-grade twins at Whitt Elementary, Hannah and Mathias Abenet.

“Aaliya is really good at this,” Hannah said. “I want to be a tutor when I get to high school.”

In only its fourth week this school year, Wylie Math Tutoring is a hit. The 26 students who showed up for tutoring help Sept. 20, kept the nine tutors busy. These tutors are real pros, assisting multiple students at a time.

“We are exploring ways to get more volunteers,” Duckworth said. “We’d love to have more tutors from Wylie High.”

Wylie Math Tutoring leaders check students in.

2019 WEHS Valedictorian Jaxson Hill started Wylie Math Tutoring in 2016 when he saw a need for math homework help. Due to the program's overwhelming success, Wylie Math Tutoring is seeking more tutors. Any Wylie ISD student in eighth grade or above wishing to volunteer, please sign up here

To receive the free tutoring service, no registration is required. Just drop by the Rita Smith Public Library on Wednesdays (following Wylie ISD’s calendar) anytime between 5:30-7 p.m.

“We just ask that students bring something to work on,” Beamer said.
