Wylie ISD to Host First-Ever Tech and Trade Career Fair
4/4/2023Designed for students interested in entering the workforce after high school, the Tech and Trade Career Fair is a night filled with information about trade schools and job opportunities that do not require a college degree.
Open to students and their families from all three Wylie ISD high schools, local business owners looking to hire and train young adults will be at the April 17 career fair. Students are encouraged to bring their resumés.
The district’s Career and Technical Education department also hosts a “Build Your Future” career day; however, it is geared toward students enrolled in upper-level CTE courses.
“This fair has a much broader industry focus,” Jessica Taylor, WEHS Career and Technical Education Counselor said.
The career fair will also have representatives from technical and trade schools and Collin College Workforce available for students to visit. Representatives from Collin College Workforce Programs will share information on how students can earn certificates in over 100 programs.
“Tech and trade schools offer programs that lead to certifications in as little as 2.5 months and students can start in the industry in that short amount of time,” Taylor said.
Cosmetology, cybersecurity, automotive, pest control, childcare, police, plumbing, real estate, and the military will be among the over 20 different industry areas that will be available for students to peruse.

“The list of representatives is growing, and there is a wide array of industries represented,” Taylor said. “Check the list often, as we are adding more every day.”
On the night of the fair, representatives will set up in the WEHS cafeteria for students and their families to visit.
“It won’t just be a bunch of handouts,” Taylor said. “There will be interactive displays, such as a welding display, and a beauty school will have hair demonstrations. Wylie Fire is bringing out a fire truck. The representatives I’ve invited to the fair are really excited about it.”
The Texas Workforce Commission will even be on-hand conducting sessions on interviewing and resumé building in the library.
“We want to do a better job of helping bring information to our students about all opportunities after high school,” Taylor said.
The Tech and Trade Career Fair is Monday, April 17 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Wylie East High School cafeteria. Wylie ISD ninth grade through seniors and their families are invited to attend.
“Come with an open mind,” Taylor said. “Find some opportunities that might fit you.”
