Wylie East Students Build Bottled Ecosystems
9/22/2022Something fishy is going on at Wylie East High School.
Mrs. Katherine Whittaker and her environmental systems classes at WEHS are constructing homes for fish.
The process involves cutting up two two-liter soda bottles and filling them with water, soil, rocks, a string, grass seed, a worm and eventually, a fish.
First, students had to cut up their two-liter bottles to create the habitat.
Senior Tori Thedford fills her ecosystem with soil before adding the worm and fish.
The bottle is meant to support both the worms and the fish while creating a safe environment for students to observe their habitat.
Students add worms to the top halves of their habitats.
The lab engages students while at the same time teaching them the importance of a clean ecosystem.
Students had to wait for the water to settle before they were able to add their fish.
