Coming Up Roses: WHS Floral Design Students Arrange Pirate Petals

Another Career and Technical Education course is providing students with industry experience.

Wylie High School’s Advanced Floral Design class is making floral arrangements for Pirate Petals, a flower-of-the-month club.

This subscription-based service provides monthly fresh floral arrangements to its subscribers. All arrangements are planned and designed by students in the floral design classes.

“The fun part is actually arranging it,” junior Yamileth Arzola said. “Trying to find what goes where, the right height, right color, right size. It’s like a puzzle.”

Prior to starting Pirate Petals, students learned the principles of design. Agriculture Science Teacher Shelby Flores taught them about creating rhythm, movement, texture, proportion and unity to balance out their arrangements.

“I like doing this,” junior Angeline Ogola said. “It's fun adding brighter parts; everyone working together to form an arrangement is fun.”

Lots of trial and error takes place during this hands-on learning experience.

“Getting flowers the right length can be difficult,” sophomore Haylen Wright said. “It has to be perfect. Once you cut it, you can't go back.”

Students observed various other floral arrangements for inspiration.

“Making these is a bit scary because I want to make it look good because people are paying for these,” sophomore Rylee Erfurt said.

Junior Lilly Willaby fell in love with floral design when she took the introduction class last year, which led her to seek employment in floriculture.

“I work at Wylie Flower & Gift Shop,” Wallaby said. “I've done funerals. I've done weddings. This is what I want to do for a living.”
