3/17/2023

During its statewide trek that included the Capitol in Austin and more, Texas Tech’s Centennial Tour made two special stops in North Texas March 16.

Wylie ISD received two of only three visits to North Texas high schools by the mobile billboard tour.

To promote the university’s 100th birthday, the mobile billboard first stopped by Wylie High School and then ventured over to Wylie East.

As part of Tech’s recruiting and outreach, Wylie ISD juniors and seniors were treated to a special visit by Texas Tech University President Lawrence Schovanec, who spoke about the advantages of being a Red Raider.

“There’s something special going on at Tech,” Schovanec said. “You have to be on campus to feel it. To be a Red Raider is to be a part of the family.”

Many students said they want to attend Texas Tech because of their own family members' experiences there. Both parents of WHS junior Roman Bueche attended Texas Tech. He enjoyed learning more about the university.

“Lubbock and Tech have a great atmosphere,” Bueche said. “l love to go visit.”

WHS senior Jayden Harris has already been accepted to Texas Tech. He plans to study  Restaurant, Hotel and Institutional Management.

“I chose Texas Tech because it has the best hospitality program,” Harris said. “They have the Skyviews restaurant where students get hands-on experience. I also loved hearing how diverse and welcoming the community is.”

Schovanec shared inspirational stories of Red Raiders and their experiences of inclusivity at Texas Tech.

“One of the most important things you’ll get at Tech is a personal connection,” Schovanec said.

The university president made his connections while visiting High and East. He took the time to visit with many students individually about what Tech has to offer them.

WEHS seniors Prince Olufemi and Peter Olajuyigbe will both attend Texas Tech in the fall and visited with Schovanec about their collegiate plans.

“My brother goes there, and he said it’s a lot of fun,” Olajuyigbe, who will be a business finance major, said.

Students then made their way to the parking lot to take photos with the Texas Tech Centennial display, an 80-foot trailer housing a giant metal 100 in scarlet and black.

“I felt like I was meeting a celebrity when I took a photo with the Texas Tech president,” WEHS senior Charleigh Stevens said. “I couldn’t wait to tell my sister, who is a senior at Tech.”

After promoting Texas Tech, Schovanec praised our school district and students.

“I commend Wylie ISD for producing students who are college aware and college ready,” Schovanec said. “I hope to see you at Tech! No one loves their school more than Red Raiders!”
