Fifth Grader Collecting Blankets for Veterans

2/16/2023

Cason Poore has a warm heart and he wants to “Warm Our Heroes.”

What started as a blanket drive in his jiu-jitsu class, is now a school-wide drive, thanks to Cason.

“It felt really great to give to others, so I wanted to keep on going,” Cason said.

The fifth grader’s jiu-jitsu coach is a Navy SEAL and asked his students to donate blankets for homeless veterans. Cason took it a step further and took the drive to his school. He is collecting blankets, coats, sleeping bags, socks and tents to donate to local homeless veterans. He is asking for new and gently used items to be dropped off at Draper Intermediate.

Cason holds a sleeping bag. Cason asks for donations.

“I’m sad they are out there, but happy to do this for them,” Cason said. “The homeless vets fought for us, so we can fight for them to get warm, but really the donations are for any homeless person, not just veterans.”

Cason will donate all of the items he collects to a local homeless shelter.

“We plan to keep a few items so that we can hand them out ourselves to the homeless we see on the streets,” Cason said.

If you’d like to donate to “Warm Our Heroes,” please drop items off at Draper Intermediate during regular school hours through Friday, Feb. 24.

“It’s going to be really cold in the next few days,” Cason said. “Every blanket donated will keep one more person warm.”
