The real construction signs provided lots of photo ops.

Construction signs and yellow caution tape covered the halls in the first grade hallway at Tibbals Elementary Sept. 30.

All first grade classes were “Under construction” as they implemented the theme into their daily learning.

The students read about building friendships, built Noun Town and participated in construction-themed math stations which involved constructing and deconstructing numbers.

“The day gives students the chance to review concepts in an interactive and exciting way,” first grade teacher Whitney Sewell said.

The first graders drew pictures of nouns and pasted them in the hallway on butcher paper to create Noun Town.

"First graders loved working through construction-themed activities to review concepts we've learned up to this point,” fellow first grade teacher Alicia Addington said.

Teachers not only decorated the entire hall and their classrooms with construction materials, but they also dressed the part.

Principal Jamie Fletcher was even able to secure an excavator for the kids to explore.

“Being surrounded with the real construction décor and getting to sit on an excavator adds so much excitement,” Ms. Sewell said. “The students also loved walking out with their hard hats as a souvenir of the day.”

Clad in their cozy PJs, and hard hats, first graders climbed into the driver’s seat and had their pictures taken by their teachers.

To top the day off, it was pajama day.

“I believe the day was full of fun and engagement,” Ms. Addington said. “This is the first room transformation we do each year, so it really makes a great impact."
