Kids who read beat the summer slide

The number one way to ensure that your child is ready for the next grade level is to READ! Read with them, encourage them to read age-appropriate books alone, and read yourself as an example!

The "summer slide" is that regression of learning that can happen to students as they take a break from academics over the summer break. Studies show that students lose up to 3 months of learning just by being mentally inactive. That slide is cumulative - meaning after years of the summer slide, students begin to fall behind in classes.*

The best way to improve academically and not fall behind is to READ. Not all classes in Wylie ISD have Summer Reading requirements, but all students have a summer reading expectation! In Wylie ISD, we understand that free choice reading is the best way to help students become lifelong readers. Please go with your child to the library or book store, offer some suggestions, and let them choose the books that meet their interests. When we read for fun, reading is fun!
