Math Help for Texas K-8 Teachers
“Deep in the Math of Texas” is a grassroots project led by the Wylie Independent School District in partnership with other school districts and organizations (Allen, Eagle Mountain-Saginaw, Northwest, Grapevine-Colleyville, Region 10, Region 11, UTA and TASM). The project has two main goals:
- To exhibit a sample of an SE Toolkit made up of resources created to assist teachers in the instruction of the K-8 Math Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills and,
- to have Texas teachers review the SE Toolkit and provide feedback.
Developed By Teachers For Teachers:
The SE’s in the sample toolkit are challenging Geometry concepts that most Texas school districts will teach this spring. They were chosen because they represent two common issues that exist throughout the new Texas math standards:
- content that has moved from a higher grade level to a lower one
- language that is vague
A team of educators, including current Wylie ISD third grade teachers, built the toolkit and assisted in the design of the web interface. The intent is to provide a quick, easy way for teachers to access the specificity and content.
It is the intention of the development team and Wylie ISD to collect feedback on the usefulness of the toolkit and then present that feedback to the State Board of Education in April. The hope is that the SBOE will then see the need to fully develop the toolkit for all math SEs in grades Kinder through 8th.
