School History & Namesake

  • Hartman Elementary opened in 1963.  The school was named in honor of Richard Floyd Hartman, a renowned Wylie educator.

    Richard Floyd Hartman was born on December 15, 1897 in Rockwall, Texas.  He attended school in Rockwall, Texas.  He graduated from North Texas State University in Denton and received a Master’s Degree from The University of Texas at Austin.   He married Irene Futrell in 1926 in Rockwall.  Mrs. Hartman taught elementary school for many years.   Mr. Hartman became the Superintendent in 1943 and  held that position for 21 years until his retirement in 1964.  Mr.  Hartman passed away in March 1980.
