STEPS TO APPLY AS A SUB

1. Apply Online (at least one reference must be a former supervisor)
2. Upload a video interview
3. A background check (will receive an email to schedule a fingerprint appointment)
4. Attend Orientation
5. Complete all online compliance training

Once you have applied and been offered a substitute position, complete all steps prior to your appointment with the HR Department.

Paper Form:

I-9 Form
PRINT, complete and deliver to HR during orientation.

Documents to bring with you to HR:

1. Identification cards for your I-9 Form. (See page 2 of the I-9 Form)
2. If you have any transcripts, you must bring them with you when you come to turn in your paperwork on orientation day. 
   (In order to receive Degreed Sub Pay, we must have a transcript.  Unofficial transcripts will be accepted.)

Professional dress is required for orientation as you will be taking a badge photo!

Instructions for Recording Attendance

• Take attendance on a skyward-generated attendance roster report.
• Always use ink.
• Take attendance at the start of class.
• Clearly call out the names of each student on the attendance roster.
• If a student is present, leave blank.
• If the student is absent from class, place an A on the line next to the absent student.
• The attendance roster must be signed and dated by the substitute teacher.
• Get the attendance roster to the attendance office as soon as possible.
• Questions? Refer to the attendance office with questions or concerns

Please Note:

• At no time is attendance allowed to be taken by a student.
• Substitutes must use a classroom attendance roster to take attendance.
• Taking attendance correctly is vital for funding and a student's permanent school records.
• When a student is incorrectly coded as absent, our District loses money intended to better our students.
• Please be accurate!

Long-Term Rates

• Do not apply to non-degreed substitutes.
• If possible, subs will be provided an anticipated or estimated length of time needed.
• To qualify for long-term pay, a degreed or certified substitute must work more than ten (10) full days in the same assignment on a continuous basis.
• If the substitute stays with the same teacher/professional assignment on a continuous basis, they will be paid the rate shown above for the entire period that he/she substitutes.

  Examples:

  • If a degreed substitute works for 12 full days in the same assignment on a continuous basis, pay would be : 12 days @ $125/day = $1,500.00.
  • If a certified substitute works for 12 full days in the same assignment on a continuous basis, pay would be: 12 days @ $150/day = $1,800.00.
  • Please note:
    • All substitute jobs are paid according to the Monthly Payroll Calendar.
    • So, as in the example above, if a degreed substitute works 12 full days in the same assignment on a continuous basis, those 12 days will probably not fall neatly into one payroll cut-off period. In that case, Skyward will initially pay the assignment starting days at the Degreed rate. Once the 11^st continuous day in the assignment is attained, (generally in the cut-off period for the subsequent check) Skyward will then pay the work dates in the cut-off period at the $125/day rate AND retro-pay the difference between the Degreed and Long-Term rates for the work dates from the prior check.
    • Long-Term Rates cannot carry over from one school year to another.

Arrive early.

• First thing, check-in with the front office. An early arrival allows you time to read the teacher’s plans and become familiar with neighboring teachers.

Read over the plans.

• Become familiar with the materials you will use during the day. Pay close attention to special directions, times, and any behavior system the campus uses.

Prepare for students to arrive.

• Make sure instructions are clearly posted, and write your name on the board. Greet the students at the door with a handshake and introduce yourself.

Take attendance.

• Use the skyward form to mark students that are not present. Please take this to the office at a later time or have a student take it down.
• Why is this important? Attendance records are a permanent part of a student's school records and are utilized for student funding calculations.

Leave notes.

• Communication is key when you are working in a teacher’s classroom. He/She will want to know how the class went and what was completed or not during the day. Take time at the end of your day to write a note about the day.

Leave the classroom as you found it.

• Be sure to have the students clean up after themselves before leaving the classroom. Clean up any materials you may have used and leave them where the teacher had them when you arrived.

Take part in any duty the teacher may have.

• All teachers have additional duties during the day (lunch, recess, or after school). Find out what they are and what you need to do to fill his/her spot.

All Wylie ISD substitute teachers are required to wear District-issued shirts or a Wylie ISD spirit shirt and a District-issued staff ID at all times. The purpose of this policy is to ensure that enrolled students, employed staff, and the general public are able to easily identify and recognize substitute teachers on campus.

Substitutes must wear dress pants or nice jeans (no cutoff, ripped, or sagging jeans, no sweats or wind suits unless substituting for a physical education class, no leggings as pants, and stirrup pants may be worn if sized appropriately). with an approved Wylie ISD substitute polo or spirit shirt. The Wylie ISD HR department will issue one complimentary shirt when the substitute is hired and attends new hire orientation before beginning to work. Substitutes may purchase additional spirit shirts from the central office. Long-term subs will not be required to wear the District-issued shirts and follow the district staff dress code.

All substitutes must maintain a neat, clean, and professional appearance.

Substitutes may request a temporary waiver from the aforementioned standards for extenuating circumstances. Those circumstances include religious or medical reasons. Each campus will have sub-shirts available for anyone who forgets their shirt or is not in compliance with the dress code that day.

Substitutes may still participate in district and campus special dress days, like Think College Thursday, spirit days, and Wylie Way Days, at the discretion of their campus principal.

Substitutes for any long-term positions (>10 consecutive days in the same position) should be hired in this order:

1. Texas Certified in the subject and grade level.
2. Texas Certified in the subject.
3. Texas Certified Teacher.
4. If you are unable to find a certified teacher, you will need to contact HR.

Short-Term and Long-Term Sub HQ Requirements:

An individual that is hired to substitute for a teacher while the teacher is out sick or on leave is not considered the teacher of record and is not required to meet the requirements of “highly qualified” but should be certified if at all possible. However, if an individual is hired to substitute for a teacher who has not been hired (a vacancy), the substitute becomes the teacher of record and must meet the requirements of a “highly qualified” teacher.

Title I Schools:

In addition, the law requires that parents of children in Title I schools must be notified if their child has been assigned to, or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by, a teacher who is not highly qualified [Section 1111(h)(6)] which includes a long-term substitute. A form letter is provided by HR to campus administrators as a communication tool for parents.
