Orchestra
High School Orchestra
9th through 12th-grade string players in high school orchestra classes hone playing skills developed in earlier grades with a goal of playing advanced literature, including that of the great Western composers. Jazz, fiddle, and rock styles are also explored and performed. Students will have numerous performances throughout the year, will participate in a solo and ensemble event, and will travel to a music festival off-campus. High school students may also audition for All-Region, All-Area, and All-State Orchestra placement. Orchestra classes are held at Wylie High School; students from other attendance zones may transfer for the orchestra program.
Junior High Orchestra
Building on the foundation established in the beginning year, 7th and 8th-grade orchestra students develop their performance skills and begin learning advanced techniques that are required for increasingly complex literature. Music theory and music history are included in the context of the performing orchestras. Junior high orchestra students will perform in several concerts throughout the school year, participate in a solo and ensemble event, and attend a music festival off-campus. Additionally, 7th and 8th graders have the opportunity to audition for the prestigious All-Region Orchestra in the fall. Orchestra classes are held at Davis/McMillan; students from other attendance zones may transfer for the orchestra program.
6th Grade Orchestra
Daily orchestra classes are offered beginning in 6th grade. Beginning orchestra students will learn fundamentals techniques for violin, viola, cello, and double bass. 6th-grade orchestra students will perform in several concerts throughout the year, participate in a solo and ensemble event, and attend a music festival off-campus. Aside from performance, orchestra students make their own musical creations and develop basic musical literacy. Orchestra classes are held at Davis/McMillan; students from other attendance zones may transfer for the orchestra program.
