Wylie ISD Appoints Veteran Director to Lead That Wylie Band
Paul Heuer, WHS Director of Bands

Wylie ISD is proud to announce that Paul Heuer has been named the new Wylie High School Head Band Director, taking the helm of That Wylie Band following the retirement of longtime director Todd Dixon this past December. This appointment is more than just a new hire – it’s a homecoming for Heuer, who previously served as an assistant band director at WHS in 2008-09 and helped launch the Wylie East band program.

“I am incredibly grateful to Mike Lipe and Todd Dixon for giving me a chance early in my career,” Heuer said. “Their leadership and passion for That Wylie Band set a standard of excellence that I have always admired. When I left Wylie ISD for my first head director position in Mansfield, I knew this district and this program would always remain close to my heart. I’ve hoped for the opportunity to return ever since, and I am excited to once again be part of this community.”

With an impressive career spanning over two decades, Heuer brings a wealth of experience and accolades to WHS. Most recently, he served as the Director of Bands at Reedy High School in Frisco ISD, where he led the program to numerous successes including an Area Finalist placement. Prior to that, Heuer spent eight years at Lovejoy High School as Director of Bands, building a recognized program. His first head director position was at Timberview High School in Mansfield ISD, a program he led for three years.

“That Wylie Band is a celebrated and highly regarded program, not just in Texas, but across the country, and it is truly an honor to be selected as its next head director,” Heuer said. “I look forward to building on the incredible legacy that has made this program so special.”

A graduate of the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music, Heuer received a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Trumpet Performance. He also earned a Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting and a Master of Music in Trumpet Performance from Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of the Arts. Heuer’s career in public education began at Birdville High School in 1999 as an assistant band director.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Paul Heuer back to Wylie ISD as the new Director of Bands at Wylie High School,” Executive Director of Fine Arts Glenn Lambert said. “After an extensive search, we found the right leader to continue this program’s tradition of excellence. Mr. Heuer’s proven track record of success, leadership, and passion for music education make him the perfect fit. His experience at the highest levels of band performance, both in marching and concert settings, speaks for itself, and we are excited for our students to learn and grow under his direction. Welcome back, Mr. Heuer!”
