Wylie High School Senior Named 2026 National Merit Semifinalist
Sevy Wong 2026 National Merit Semifinalist

Wylie ISD is proud to announce that Wylie High School senior Sevy Wang has been recognized as a Semifinalist in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program. This academically talented student now has the opportunity to continue in the competition for some of the 6,930 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $26 million that will be offered next spring.

The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. Over 1.3 million juniors in about 20,000 high schools entered the 2026 program by taking the 2024 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants.

To advance to the Finalist level, Semifinalists and their schools must submit a detailed application that includes academic records, leadership activities, employment, honors and awards, and a student essay. Students must also earn SAT or ACT scores that confirm their earlier PSAT/NMSQT performance. About 95 percent of Semifinalists are expected to become Finalists, and those advancing will be notified in February 2026. Roughly half of the Finalists will be selected as National Merit Scholarship winners, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

Wylie ISD congratulates Sevy on this accomplishment and wishes him the best as he continues in the competition and represents the district with excellence.
