Wylie High Principal Brian Alexander Honored with Patriot Award

Wylie High School Principal Brian Alexander was recognized with the Patriot Award on Friday, Aug. 22, in a surprise ceremony held in the Montgomery Center.

The award, presented by the Office of the Secretary of Defense and supported by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), honors supervisors who provide outstanding support to employees serving in the National Guard or Reserve.

Former Wylie High School teacher and current Community ISD assistant principal Steven McBrayer returned to campus in uniform to present the award. McBrayer, who served in the Texas State Guard during his time at Wylie ISD, credited Alexander for his support throughout multiple deployments.

“Wylie High School, and more importantly, Brian Alexander, played a huge impact on me being able to advance my career,” McBrayer said. “During my time at WHS, I was also in the Texas State Guard. In two years, I deployed numerous times either for an emergency disaster or annual training. Mr. Alexander was always willing to work with me and my duty to the State.”

The ceremony began with a surprise entrance as the Wylie High drumline, cheerleaders, several members of the drill team, and the AFJROTC color guard filled the Montgomery Center, celebrating their principal in true Friday night lights fashion. Alexander’s family, fellow administrators, and staff members were also waiting to greet him, making the surprise that much more of an honor.

Alexander expressed his gratitude for the recognition while emphasizing the sacrifices of service members.

“It is an honor to be acknowledged by those who deserve the most recognition,” Alexander said. “Members of our armed forces give so much of themselves in service of our country. I’m just grateful to be able to contribute what I can to the betterment of our students and staff.”

He also reflected on his role as a mentor to McBrayer, who completed his administrator certification while teaching at Wylie High.

“We spent the better part of two years working through his program and talking about leadership,” Alexander said. “I can confidently say that he approaches his responsibilities as an educator and serviceman with equal levels of enthusiasm and professionalism. I’m proud to have been a small part of his journey.”

McBrayer recently resigned his position with the Texas State Guard, making the Patriot Award presentation his final official act in uniform.

“I can’t think of a better reason to put my uniform on one last time than to say thanks to my former boss and mentor,” he said.

The recognition highlighted not only Alexander’s leadership but also the strong ties within the Wylie High community and its support for those who serve.
