Wylie High APEX Legends Team Wins National Championship

Wylie High School’s Esports program has reached a new milestone after its APEX Legends team captured the national championship, cementing the Pirates as one of the nation’s premier high school Esports programs.

Competing against 18 of the best teams from across the country at the national tournament in Orlando, the Wylie High trio of Oliver Carel, Ryan Clever, and Tristan Drennan battled through six intense matches before beating XPL-WTX Trolls, a select Esports organization, by a final score of 113-111 to claim the national title.

Esports sponsor Robert Arthur said the accomplishments reflect the dedication and hard work of every student in the program.

“Words cannot describe how proud I am of our students,” Arthur said. “APEX was able to win nationals, our Fortnite team finished sixth out of 48 teams and were the highest-placing high school team, and Rocket League were state champions this year and finished as national semifinalists in Wylie High School’s first-ever appearance at nationals.”

The national championship is the latest achievement for a program that continues to raise the standard of competitive gaming at Wylie High. Earlier in the season, the APEX Legends team successfully defended its back-to-back Texas state championship, while Rocket League claimed the school's first-ever state title in the game.

With state championships, a national championship, and multiple national tournament appearances this season, Wylie High’s Esports program continues to establish itself among the elite programs in the country while providing students with opportunities to compete at the highest level and pursue collegiate Esports scholarships.
