Wylie East High School English Teacher Elizabeth Simmons was recently named the Outstanding Adjunct Professor of the Year for Collin College, an honor given to just one among the more than 543 adjunct professors who teach for the college. This announcement was made during All College Day, Collin’s annual convocation-style event.
Simmons admitted she was taken aback when she first learned she was nominated for the honor.
“When I heard my name announced as the recipient of the award, I was in stunned disbelief,” she said. “Once those initial feelings subsided (a tiny bit), I was humbled. I was in the presence of so many accomplished professors, and I never would have, in my wildest dreams, put myself in the same intellectual category as them.”
Her principal at WEHS was not surprised, however.
“We are incredibly proud of Elizabeth for being named Adjunct Professor of the Year at Collin College,” WEHS Principal Tiffany Doolan said. “This is a tremendous honor that reflects not only her deep knowledge of English but also her passion for teaching and dedication to her students. She truly exemplifies excellence in education, and we are fortunate to have her on our campus.”
Collin College has partnerships with 16 area school districts to provide dual-credit opportunities to local high school students interested in pursuing higher education while enrolled in high school. Simmons plays a key role in that effort, guiding students through challenging coursework while building their confidence as learners.
Courtney Mulcahy, MFA, Collin College Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, nominated Simmons for Outstanding Adjunct Professor because of her commitment to growth and development as an educator, her classroom innovation, and her student engagement.
“Professor Simmons’ innovation in the classroom is evident in her unique approach to teaching writing,” Mulcahy said in her nomination. “She shifts students’ perspectives by equating writing to everyday communication, helping them overcome anxiety and develop confidence.”
Mulcahy emphasizes Simmons’ dedication to student learning beyond the classroom.
“As an assistant tennis coach, sponsor for student clubs, and mentor for extracurricular activities, she builds meaningful relationships that extend past the academic setting,” Mulcahy said. “She cultivates a warm and inviting classroom where students feel supported—not just in their coursework but in their personal and academic growth. Many students return for guidance on college admissions, career advice, and letters of recommendation, a testament to her lasting impact.”

Executive Director of Secondary Curriculum, Stephen Davis, is thrilled that Professor Simmons has been recognized as Adjunct Professor of the Year.
“For years, the students and staff at Wylie East have known she is the best of the best,” Davis said. “She makes an incredible impact on her students every day, and this recognition is so well deserved.”
Simmons describes teaching as the most rewarding career she has ever pursued, especially because of the connections she builds with students.
“By building trusting relationships, students become more comfortable with the learning environment, which translates into students gaining confidence in their ability to communicate, directly and positively impacting their critical thinking and writing skills,” Simmons said. “I am passionate about giving students the tools they need to reap the benefits of growth through critical thinking and exploration of knowledge. Ultimately, I love witnessing students become empowered when they realize their potential.”
Congratulations, Elizabeth Simmons! You inspire our students and make Wylie ISD proud!
“I am validated with this award,” Simmons said. “I am passionate about what I do, and now I feel I can say that ‘I was made for this.’”
