WHS Winterguard Makes History

Congratulations to Wylie High School Winterguard for placing 11th overall at the WGI Color Guard World Championships in Dayton, Ohio.

Varsity Winterguard made history by being the first Wylie ISD school to ever make it to the prestigious World Championships finals, where only the top 20 in the world compete.

After flight delays, spending the night in the terminal and changing on the airplane, the team still received one of the highest scores of the day in Prelims where over 130 teams competed.

“I am incredibly proud of them,” Color Guard Director Walter Jackson said. “I can’t even imagine getting ready on the plane and doing their makeup so well. Genuinely, it was shocking to us that we could still perform at such a high level after all that. It really showed the resilience of the kids and how hungry they were for that opportunity.”

Their performance of “The De Vil is in the Details,” advanced Varsity Winterguard all the way to Finals -- a first for both Wylie High School and Wylie ISD. The team received the first, and only, standing ovation of the night as well as the FloMarching ‘Fan Favorite’ vote.

Jackson gave a special thank you to the parents who were already in Cincinnati when they finally arrived. He expressed his appreciation for their presence and support, noting their important role in helping the team get to the competition.

“Without them, we would have had a much harder time getting around,” Jackson said.

Jackson said he was grateful for the support of the junior varsity students and parents as JV members assisted with the floor and props and parents helped chaperone the trip.
