Wylie East Leo Club Members Step Up to Help Young Girl

In a heartwarming display of compassion and community spirit, four dedicated members of the Wylie East High School Leo Club transformed a bedroom into a dream come true for 5-year-old Nova, who recently lost her mother, Courtney Hepler, a WEHS Class of 2017 alumna.

Akin Elementary first grade teacher Lesley Cobb was compelled to take action.

“This family is very dear to me because I taught all three children first grade at Akin Elementary many years ago,” Cobb said.
Cobb reached out to see how she could help. The young girl’s grandmother, Debra Hepler, told Cobb that Nova had expressed a wish for a pink bedroom.

Cobb coordinated with WEHS Leo Club Sponsor Alex Tooke to make Nova's dream a reality.

Without hesitation, Leo Club members, Ryan Lee, Cindy Lee, Abel Tefera and Jennifer Nguyen, volunteered their time and resources to paint Nova's bedroom.

“I'm so grateful to teach in a community that so readily rallies around disaster,” Tooke said. “Mrs. Cobb heard the news and came up with a game plan to provide relief; my sweet LEOs pounced on the opportunity to bring a little girl a reason to smile and helped create a space for her to feel safe. These kids never hesitate to show up when there's work to be done or a need to be met. I am very proud of them!”

Nova was spending time with her aunt the day the Leo Club Members came to paint her room.

“The students showed up eager and ready to get her room painted before she got home,” Hepler said. “[They] were all such loving and caring kids and had huge smiles on their faces as Nova walked in her room to see the students finishing up painting her room her favorite color -- pink.”

These students even spent their own money and brought gifts for Nova.

“Honestly, I could not be more proud and grateful for these amazing and selfless students as they devoted a summer day to paint [this] bedroom!” Cobb said.
