Game On: Wylie High Esports Wins Two State Titles; Three Teams Advance to Nationals
- News
Wylie High School’s Esports program is celebrating a historic season after bringing home two state championships and earning national recognition as one of the top high school Esports programs in the country.
The WHS Rocket League team of Zayvion Riley, Chris Cantrell, and Cameron Burk claimed the school’s first-ever Rocket League state championship title after dominating Westlake High School with a 4-0 sweep in the grand finals.

Additionally, the APEX Legends team of Oliver Carel, Tristan Drennan, Marcus Kelton, and Ryan Clever successfully defended their back-to-back state championship crown by sweeping Lubbock High School 3-0 in the best-of-five grand finals series.

Rocket League, APEX Legends, & Fortnite, consisting of Austin Truong and Muzammil Ahsan, all advance to nationals in Orlando this Summer based on their achievements this season and at state.
These championship performances highlight the continued growth and success of the Wylie High School Esports program on the state stage.
Tristan Drennan was also named to the first-ever all-state Esports team in Texas at TexSEF’s Texas Undisputed State Championships.
Esports sponsor Robert Arthur said the program’s growth is fueled by students' commitment.
“I am so proud of the dedication all our students have had throughout our program since I took over nearly two and a half years ago,” Arthur said. “Since then, we have added many trophies, game titles, and opportunities for our students.
The success continues to elevate the Wylie High Esports program on the national stage. According to USA Today’s end-of-season rankings, Wylie High is now ranked the No. 14 high school Esports program in the nation.
In addition to the state championships, three Wylie High teams qualified for national competition:
- Fortnite — back-to-back state champions in 2024 and 2025 and semifinalists this season
- Rocket League — current state champions
- APEX Legends — current state champions
Over the past two years, Wylie High’s Esports teams have combined for five state championships while also helping students earn tuition relief and scholarship opportunities from top Esports colleges across the nation.
Arthur looks forward to watching his team level up and continue to unlock new achievements.
“I am excited to see how they continue to improve as competitors and young men and women through the opportunities our Esports program provides them,” Arthur said. “We need a second trophy case as we have already surpassed the capacity this one can handle!”
