Cox Hosts First-Ever Reading, Math Family Game Night

Students and their families filled Cox Elementary for a night of food, games and fun!

Cox hosted its very first Reading and Math Family Game Night Jan. 19.

“We had a packed house,” Title 1 Facilitator Susie Nichols said. “I was really impressed with the number of families who came out.”

As students ventured through the different activities, they had their bingo cards stamped. These cards were then turned in and names were drawn the following day during the announcements for prizes.

“My family loved the Cox Elementary Family Night!” Cox Parent Reggie Bibb said. “Our daughters were begging us to go from the day they brought home the invitations.”

Local “celebrities” read to students in the library throughout the night. Wylie ISD Superintendent Dr. David Vinson, local orthodontist Dr. Hardik Kapadia, and the Mayor of Sachse, Jeff Bickerstaff read their favorite children’s books aloud to Cox Coyotes and their families.

Each grade level set up educational games in the hallways. When parents visited the math or reading rooms, they received a game to take with them to play with their children to support academics at home.

“It was a fun way to learn more about what they are learning,” Bibb said. “Our second grader, Zoe, is always wanting to play the card game ‘War’ with us at home, and now we realize where she learned it and how much fun the game is. Cox Elementary always puts on great family events, and this one was one of our favorites!”

Teachers provided parents with information about STAAR testing in the computer lab.

“With STAAR being online this year, coupled with a lot of these kids taking it for the first time, I was glad to see so many parents interested and attending this session,” Assistant Principal Angela Clark said.

Sachse Fire Rescue even came out to participate in the family night. They brought a fire truck and an ambulance for students to explore.

“Susie did an amazing job planning this night!” Cox Principal Krista Wison said. “I asked her if she would take on the task of planning this night and she did a phenomenal job! I know the parents and their children had a really great night.”
