Birmingham Elementary Hosts Annual Third Grade Market Day
- News
At Birmingham Elementary, third-grade students dove into entrepreneurship during a recent Market Day event, where classmates and staff explored and purchased goods from their creative booths run by the Birmingham Bears.
Third-grade social studies and reading teachers Lynette Barnor, Denise Chavez, and Amy Montgomery led the Market Day. Over the course of 10 days, students used their creativity to make a product or service of their choice, ranging from slime to mystery plants.
“You never know what you are going to get at the Birmingham Market Days,” Principal Tracy Halligan said.
Third-grader Olivia Munoz and her group designed clay pots to sell at their booth, the Pottery Pop Shop.
“We agreed on clay pots because I'm good at using clay and my teammates are good at sculpting,” Munoz said.
To purchase the products, students and staff were given complimentary class cash to “pay” for any items of their choice. The student entrepreneurs had a blast receiving their well-earned cash.
“We’re selling a lot, getting good business and making a lot of money,” Munoz said.
Students learned in class how to successfully advertise and sell to customers. They designed poster boards to advertise their products with in-depth information about what they were selling.
Third-grader Usman Memon and his teammate made and sold clay food items.
“I made any food I like to eat out of the clay,” Memon said. “My favorite one is the chicken nugget.”
Market Day entered its fourth year at Birmingham Elementary and has continued to grow, evolving from a small classroom to now filling the school cafeteria.
This event continues to teach kids valuable lessons in creativity, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and collaboration while preparing them for success now and in the evolving workforce of the future.
