McKinney Vento / Homeless Education

  • The federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Improvement Act and Texas State law (Texas Education Code Chapter 25) protect the right of homeless children and youth to receive a free and appropriate public education.

The term “homeless children and youth” is defined as individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. This includes children and youth who are:

    • sharing the housing of others due to loss of housing or economic hardship
    • living in motels/hotels
    • living in emergency or transitional housing
    • living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, or substandard housing

Services provided to homeless families include:

    • free school meals
    • immediate enrollment
    • transportation support
    • school supplies
    • other services as needed

If your family is residing in a temporary living arrangement due to loss of housing or economic hardship, please contact our district Family Liaison for assistance.
