STATE OF TEXAS ASSESSMENT OF ACADEMIC READINESS (STAAR)

In Junior High School, the following State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Assessments will be administered:

    • 7th Grade Reading
    • 7th Grade Writing
    • 7th Grade Mathematics
    • 8th Grade Reading*
    • 8th Grade Mathematics* or Algebra I
    • 8th Grade Social Studies
    • 8th Grade Science

*The 8th Grade Mathematics and 8th Grade Reading tests are a part of the Texas Education Agency’s Student Success Initiative.  As specified by these requirements, a student may advance to the next grade level only by passing these tests or by unanimous decision of his or her grade placement committee that the student is likely to perform at grade level after additional instruction.  All students in grades 3-8 must take both a math and english assessment due to federal requirements.  This includes any 8th grade students taking Geometry.

The goal of the SSI is to ensure that all students receive the instruction and support they need to be academically successful in reading and mathematics. This effort depends greatly on schools, parents, and community members working in partnership to meet individual student needs.  Students have three opportunities to pass the STAAR reading test and three opportunities to pass the STAAR mathematics test—two during the spring and one during the summer.
