Why Use Parent Access?
For a summary of reasons to register and use this feature, view a multi-media presentation which summarizes plans for the future: Why You Should Use Parent Access.

A Statement Regarding Parent Access
After years of searching, researching, planning and creating, WISD is pleased to announce the implementation of Assess+, our electronic gradebook, created by WISD, for WISD.  An exciting feature of Assess+ is Parent Access, which provides registered parents of WISD students the ability to monitor the grades and attendance of their students.

Wylie ISD realizes the importance of working with our parents in the community to make our district the best in the state.  Parent Access is yet another avenue of communication in pursuit of our continual goal of collaboration and communication between teachers, administrators and parents.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Will parents have to sign up again every year to maintain this access?

Once a student/parent account is registered into the Parent Access system, that account will continue from year to year.  If a new student enrolls or transfers into the district, or is promoted into the second grade, the parent will have to go through some procedure to enter their child into the system. This should be an easy process handled at each campus.

2.  Is there any way for parents to tell if an assignment has been given, but not yet graded?

In Assess+ Parent Access, the only way a parent can know if an assignment has been given and graded is if the teacher indicates it there. The due date for each assignment will be displayed with each grade.  Teachers are professionals who need the freedom to enter the assignment at the appropriate time, because often lesson plans must be altered for re-teaching or other needs.

3. Is there any way to tell what day the assignment was given to students?

When teachers enter their assignments, they are only required to label the grade with a due date.

4.  What are some of the features of Parent Access for the future?

There are many!  Some parents are choosing to rely solely on their students' access, but the information provided through their view is very limited when compared to Parent Access.  Here are just a few plans for the future of Parent Access, not available with the students' access:

  • On-line forms may be signed electronically.

  • Check on lunch account balances (exploring the possibility of on-line payment for lunch accounts).

  • Special announcements for parents.

  • Parent accounts last from year-to-year; student accounts are wiped out each summer.

  • E-mail alerts when students’ averages drop below passing.

  • If a parent has more than one student, all of their students will be accessible through one interface without having to log in for each child.

  • Parents will not be subjected to random, forced password changes as students (and WISD staff members) are.

  • Future avenue for parent input through district surveys.

  • Print off student schedules on-line.

Points to Remember

  • Parent Access is only available for grades 2-12.
  • Approximately every 24 hours, all data in Assess+ is updated from the Region 10 service center.  Consequently, an absence will not show for 24 hours. The parent viewer will now update at 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day. Any grade entries made during the workday or after 5 p.m. will not be reflected until the next update.
  • Grades should not be taken as necessarily accurate for eligibility, such as in athletics or other extra-curricular activities.  If there is a question, campuses should be contacted to confirm the actual grades.
  • If you remain inactive while logged into Parent Access, you will be automatically logged off in 20 minutes.
  • Your username will always be your e-mail address.
  • If your username changes, you must change your account information in Assess+ to reflect your new address.

Security

  • By law, the district must do everything in its power to protect the personal, confidential information and grades of our students.
  • Every connection to Parent Access goes through 128-bit encryption, the same security financial institutions use for on-line banking. It has never been hacked.

The Teachers’ View

  • How they see it: anxious and excited.  This opens up a fabulous tool for communication between parents and teachers, but they live incredibly busy lives, with many responsibilities.  Our hope is that parents will bear this in mind.
  • Allow teachers time to enter grades: usually a one-week “turn around time” is the goal, but please allow for extenuating circumstances.
  • Teachers don’t “give grades”—they are earned by the students.
  • Suggestion #1: Send a note or e-mail to the teacher if you see this as a positive thing.
  • Suggestion #2: Please ask your child about a grade before contacting your teacher.

Logging on for the First Time

Agreement with Acceptable Use Policy is a requirement for everyone who uses Parent Access.  Parents will need to indicate their agreement at the time of their first log in to Parent Access.  After that, it will no longer appear.

Upon your agreement with the Acceptable Use Policy, you will need to change the temporary password you were given at your registration.  You will want to change this to a password to something more meaningful to you, but please consider some of the following suggestions below:

  • What type of password?
    • Something you can easily remember.
    • The longer, the better.
    • It should have a mixture of numbers and letters.
    • The use of upper/lower cases mixed is even more secure.
  • The level of your password security will be up to you.
  • Type your new password in two times (see picture below) to confirm it, and click Create Account.

How Grades Are Weighted

Consistent policies have been created district-wide to ensure equity in grading.  In most cases, grade levels have age-appropriate weightings by percentage, and are generally divided into two categories:  Major and Minor grades.

  • Major Grades.  Usually these grades assess multiple-task assignments, such as projects and major tests.
  • Minor Grades.  Often referred to as "daily grades," minor grades tend to cover less material at a time, such as homework or a small quiz.

***It is important to remember these percentage reflect an averaging of all individual grades in each of the two categories.  In other words, if a secondary student had an 85 and a 92 for minor grades (count 25%) and an 87 for a major grade (counts 75%), the minor grade average would be 22.125 (88.5 x 25%) + the major grade of  65.25 (87 X 75%) = 87.3, or a current average of 87.

Weightings By Campus for 2003-2004

  • Elementary (2-4):  75% Minor, 25% Major
  • Intermediate (5-6):  60% Minor, 40% Major
  • Junior High (7-8):  40% Minor, 60% Major
  • High School (9-10): 25% Minor, 75% Major

Gradebook Symbols
Note the red circle which highlights the Legend in the picture above. These symbols carry significant meaning, of which parents should have a clear understanding.  Please see the table below:

Symbols Meaning
X

Exempt.  The student doesn't have to do the assignment, and it won't count against their grade.

**

No grade has been entered. Nothing will be averaged.
z
Unlike a traditional "0," a student has made a zero that may be made up: "0" means you're toast. In the Parent Viewer Mom and Dad can see that Johnny's grade may be made up.
  • Z's will be calculated as a zero until they are made up.  At the end of the six weeks, the z's will stay z's to show that these grades could've been made up.
  • To change a z to a 0, the teacher must manually change the z/Save.
I
Incompletes.  I has to be entered into an assignment, and will change the average to an I until it's resolved.

Viewing Individual Assignments
To view specific, class assignments, click any six weeks average listed for a class.  Some very important things to remember:

  • District policy mandates that six weeks and semester averages may be no lower than 50 and no higher than 100 on a report card.
  • However, individual assignments may extend below 50, but not 100.  .  Please note the top, red circle shows a 50 average for George Bush in the second six weeks of his Algebra I class, but when clicking that 50, his actual average is a 40 (see lower, red circle).
