ESL/ Bilingual / Dual Language

2010-2011 Two-Way Dual Language Guidelines

Each student who is identified as Limited English Proficient shall be provided an opportunity to participate in a special language program to ensure equal education opportunity.

Wylie Independent School District currently serves our LEP students through the following programs:

One-Way Dual Language 50/50 Model (Grade 1-3)
This program will serve Limited English Proficient students.  It is the district's intent to add a grade level within the One-Way Dual Language Program each year until 6th Grade.  This program provides instruction in Spanish and English on an alternate day basis.  The curriculum used for instruction is the same district curriculum provided to all mainstream students participating in our general education program.  The primary goal of this program is to produce children who are bilingual, bi-literate, and bi-cultural.  The program is designed to address the affective, linguistic, and cognitive needs of each student.

Two-Way Dual Language 50/50 Model (Grades K-4)
This program provides instruction in Spanish and in English on an alternate day basis.  Students included in this program and LEP and Non-LEP. The curriculum used for instruction is the same district curriculum provided to all mainstream students participating in our general education program.  Primary goal of this program is to produce children who are bilingual, bi-literate, and bi-cultural.  The program is designed to address the affective, linguistic, and cognitive needs of each student.

The primary difference between the One-Way Dual Language Program and the Two-Way Dual Language Program is the students it serves.  The One-Way Dual Language Program only serves students who are identified as Limited English Proficient per state identification criteria.  The Two-Way Dual Language Program serves students who are identified as Limited English Proficient and students who are Non-Limited English Proficient (Native English Speakers).

Traditional Spanish Bilingual Education Program (Pre-Kindergarten and Grades 5-6)
Students receive instruction in their primary language as needed to ensure academic success.  Amount of Spanish instruction is largely determined by individual student need.  The program is designed to address the affective, linguistic, and cognitive needs of each student.

English as A Second Language Program (Pre-Kindergarten – Grade 12)
The English as a Second Language program shall address the affective, linguistic, and cognitive needs of LEP students.  The program is designed to consider the students’ learning experiences and the cultural aspects of each student’s background.  ESL instruction is provided to support students participating in the general education classroom and consists of intensive academic language instruction.
