Dyslexia Referral Process

Wylie ISD follows the Response to Intervention Model (RtI). Students must be enrolled in Wylie ISD to be considered for any Dyslexia services (assessment or intervention).   Referrals of enrolled students may be made by teachers, parents, students, or any other person.   Referrals are brought before the RESULTS (Recommending Effective Strategies to Unlock Learning to Struggling Students) Committee for consideration to ensure that consistent procedures are followed throughout the district.   Contact the campus counselor for specific questions about this process.

School districts are not required to implement services based upon the results and recommendations of outside evaluations; however, such evaluations may be part of the historical data collected and reviewed by the RESULTS committee in making determinations for appropriate interventions.

Wylie ISD attempts to identify students with dyslexic characteristics early in their educational career in order to follow current research findings that such early intervention is a key component of later student success.

To achieve this goal:

·        Students in first grade will be targeted for early intervention through the Texas Primary Reading Inventory (TPRI), & teacher or parent referral

·        No additional formal assessments will be conducted at this time

·        Teachers and/or parents may complete an observation form to document that characteristics of Dyslexia are present

·        Struggling students receive one of 3 intervention tiers based upon district and state criteria

Students targeted for Early Intervention during 1st grade, will then be carefully considered for a complete Dyslexia Assessment at the end of 1st grade or beginning of 2nd grade, again based on their progress on the TPRI.

Students in grades 2-12 who exhibit dyslexia characteristics will be considered for Dyslexia Assessment should interventions in the RtI (Response to Intervention) process be found inadequate to meet the  individual needs of the student after an appropriate period of time.

Students previously identified by another district as dyslexic will be placed into the closest match for services possible upon transferring to Wylie ISD.   Contact: Lexie Barefoot for information should you be planning a move into Wylie ISD. 972-429-3079
