Dyslexia Program Curriculum

Delivery of Instruction:
(The type of instruction depends upon the level of student need as well as the personnel available to provide dyslexia services to a specific campus. Services shall be equitable and appropriate to meet specific student needs.)

Curriculum:
All curriculum taught in Wylie ISD is based upon Alphabetic Phonics, which is an Orton-Gillingham Curriculum.
Wylie ISD follows all TEA guidelines outlined in the Dyslexia Handbook (Procedures Concerning Dyslexia & Related Disorders ; February 2007) for the identification and remediation of dyslexic students enrolled in our district.
Elementary Dyslexia Program – Grades K-4 (Alpha-phonics)
At the elementary level Dyslexia services are a pull out class known as Alpha-phonics. The curriculum implemented is Take Flight, which is a research-based, Orton Gillingham method recently revised by Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children according to the most current dyslexia research. Direct and explicit instruction in phonemic awareness and single word decoding is provided to small groups of identified children in grades 2-4. Attention is also given to fluency and comprehension skills. Services are provided within the school day at the child’s home campus, by a teacher specially trained in the area of dyslexia. Early intervention programs are in place to meet the needs of kindergarten and first grade students with dyslexic characteristics and family history of dyslexia. Earobics and Lexia software programs are utilized at all elementary campuses to provide foundation skills for reading development of targeted first graders, while Phonemic Awareness for Young Children is available to all Wylie ISD Kindergarten classrooms. Student suspected of dyslexia may be referred for a full dyslexia evaluation by parents, teachers, or others through the campus RESULTS committees.
Intermediate Dyslexia Program -Grades 5-6 (Alpha-phonics)
At the Intermediate level Alpha-phonics continues to be a pull out class implementing the Take Flight curriculum. Special attention is given to strengthen fluency, accuracy, and comprehension in context of daily reading activities. Supplemental services may include the use of Lexia, Six Minute Solutions, Soliloquy, or Read Naturally either in classroom or tutorial settings as appropriate to meet the individual needs of students. Students who enter the Dyslexia Program in 2nd or 3rd grade may complete the curriculum during the Intermediate grades and therefore be dismissed; however, these students typically continue to receive needed accommodations under SpEd or 504. Other students may require some additional support through a "transitional" class where specific deficit areas can be more directly addressed and technology can be used to provide students with lifelong tools for assistance.
Secondary Dyslexia Program -Grades 7-12 (Language Science) Dyslexia Intervention in grades 7 through 12 is a scheduled class known as Language Science. This class is a local elective credit. At the Junior High level, these classes are often assigned in place of the students’ regular reading class, unless the ARD or 504 committee requires the student have both regular reading and Language Science. When not replacing a regular reading class requirement, Language Science is taken as an elective. The curriculum implemented at this level is selected based on the specific needs of the students. Take Flight, Lexia, and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital’s Literacy Program are all possible choices of intervention at this level. All of these programs were designed for a fast paced implementation of the Orton-Gillingham curriculum components to meet the needs of more mature dyslexic students. They also meet the guidelines outlined in the TEA Dyslexia Handbook.
