Senior service projects Wylie High School recently challenged its 2010 senior class members to get involved by volunteering time to charity projects or participating in community service. Administrators also designated class time to the cause and permitted students to choose their own projects or activities.
Although the challenge wasn’t a requirement, many seniors answered the call and volunteered in a variety of activities that ranged from cleaning baseball parks and gravesites to collecting food for the Christian Care Center.
Seniors Kayla Poetschke, Melonie Hampton and Anelisee Lopez provided a “Pirate Beauty Salon Day” at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Wylie. The residents were pampered to hand massages and manicures, some of whom selected Wylie Maroon for their nail polish color.
Members of the Varsity Baseball team, including Matthew Bass and Brandon Mays, spent their morning cleaning the school’s baseball fields before heading off to a team meeting.
Some students donated their time outside of Wylie. Sarah Coughlin and Katie Allen rode with Sarah’s family to DFW Airport to greet troops returning from tours of duty. Part of the Welcome Home a Hero” project, Sarah and Katie made signs that not only got the attention of the soldiers, but also of an army field photographer for Reuters and the Associated Press.
Whether the projects were big or small, the students couldn’t help leaving their experiences with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
“It was an amazing feeling to know that giving a couple of hours of our time brought joy to someone and gave us an experience we’ll never forget,” said Anelisse. “I hope to do more of it soon.”
