Valerie Plumlee named principal of Akin Elementary

Assistant Principal Valerie Plumlee has been named principal of Akin Elementary effective July 1.  The WISD Board of Trustees approved Mrs. Plumlee’s selection at its June board meeting, filling the position vacated by Joe Cearley who retired at the end of the school year.

A graduate of Wylie High School, Mrs. Plumlee has a Bachelor’s of Science from Texas Tech University and a Master’s in Education Administration from Texas A & M at Commerce.  She also has 28 years experience in education including 11 years with Wylie ISD; four as an assistant principal.

“When reviewing candidates for the position, it was important to ensure the integrity and success established at the school,” stated Superintendent H. John Fuller.  “Valerie’s experience with the Akin school family and proven professionalism made her the best fit.”

Mrs. Plumlee is eager to get to work and looks forward to the upcoming school year.  When asked to describe the one thing that she feels will help her the most as a principal, she was quick to reply.

“Akin’s biggest asset is the relationships the staff has with the parents,” said Ms. Plumlee.  “Our volunteer, PTA and Watch DOGS programs provide a supportive base for our teachers.  In turn, our staff constantly communicates the need for parental involvement, fostering an environment that is 100 percent focused on students.  This synergetic relationship translates into student success.”
