Dates set for WISD Acceleration Tests

Wylie ISD has designated September 22-24, 2008, for examinations to be administered for student acceleration.  By demonstrating mastery of  90 percent or higher on tests covering each of the core subject areas of language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science, students may advance one grade or receive secondary credit for a course not yet taken.  Students must be registered with their school counselor prior to September 8.

A student in grades 9-12 may receive credit for an academic subject in which the student has received no prior instruction, and scores 90 percent or above on a criterion-referenced test for acceleration for the applicable course.  The examination score for accredited courses will be entered on the student’s transcript.

A student in grades 1-7 may be accelerated one grade level by meeting the following requirements:

1.       Scoring 90% or above on a content area test in all of the following areas - language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science- for the grade level to be skipped .

2.       A district representative recommends that the student be accelerated.

3.       The parent or guardian gives written approval of the acceleration.

A student who qualifies for kindergarten enrollment, but not yet six years old at the beginning of the school year may be advanced to the first grade following evaluation of the criteria listed below:

1.       Scores on reasoning ability and core content achievement tests covering the grade-level curriculum expectations administered by the school district.

2.       Recommendation by kindergarten teacher.

3.       Chronological age and observed social and emotional development by the student.

4.       Other criteria deemed appropriate by the principal and superintendent.

If you would like to recommend your child for this testing, please contact your school counselor by September 8 to discuss acceleration testing for your child.
