Dual Language Two-Way Immersion ProgramThe Dual Language Two Way Immersion Program is a challenging academic program designed to provide instruction to students in two languages – English and Spanish. The communication skills of thinking, listening, speaking, reading and writing two languages are acquired while students are engaged academically in a challenging, literature based, learning environment. The goal is to develop comprehensive literacy in both languages by the sixth grade and beyond.
Students who are entering kindergarten or first grade in Wylie ISD in August 2008 are eligible to apply to the program.
All of the dual-language classrooms are comprised of half Spanish-speaking and half English-speaking students. Approximately 50 percent of the curriculum is taught in each language. At that time, students will receive 50 percent instruction in Spanish and 50 percent in English.
Program goals • Increase achievement for all students. • Achieve bilingualism and “biliteracy” of participating students. • Increase student cooperation, cultural sensitivity, and self-esteem. • Foster cultural diversity and respect among all students. • Promote a sense of community throughout the school.
Parent participation and commitment To ensure achievement and success, it is necessary for families to commit to the program for several years. Active parental support is extremely important to the long-term success of the Wylie ISD Dual Language Program. Involvement in the classroom, helping your child with homework, attending parent workshops, and providing feedback will be an integral part of this program.
