MJHS Zero Policy
Zeros Are Not Permitted
McMillan Junior High places much importance on all work that is assigned students. Assignments that are to be completed outside of class are considered just as important as assignments, work and assessments that are completed in class. Also, it is our belief that students should be held responsible for the high academic expectations we put on them and the work they complete.
This is why McMillan Junior High has a “Zeros Are Not Permitted” program. Students have two opportunities to turn in their assignments with only point reduction as a consequence. It is the belief that once a student chooses to not turn in an assignment after the second chance it becomes a discipline issue. Since it becomes a discipline issue, we assign a “discipline” consequence of evening school. Once in evening school the student will have the opportunity to complete the work and receive partial credit. This way, the student still completes the academic requirement, but has a consequence for the choice that was made.
This program has been in place for three years and we have seen many positive results. There have been fewer failures per six weeks and for the year. Our TAKS scores have steadily improved. And the number of students in evening school has decreased, even though numbers are high at the first of the year as students get used to being held responsible for turning in their work.
