Welcome to McMillan!
Welcome to the New Year at McMillan Junior High. I am very
excited about all of the great things that will be happening. Our
teachers and staff have been working hard to provide interesting and
engaging activities for our students to complete and we are all working
hard to make sure all of our students achieve success this new school
year.
2009-10 was a very successful year for the Marauders. All of our
extra-curricular and co-curricular groups performed exceptionally. Most
importantly our students excelled academically. Our TAKS scores were the
highest in the school’s history and McMillan has received a “Recognized”
rating. We have the best students and the best teachers in the state.
It’s great to be a Marauder! More...

All Junior High parents and student leaders are invited to a Rachel’s Challenge presentation on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 6:30 pm at McMillan Junior High school. Each of the Junior High schools have adopted Rachel’s Challenge to inspire, equip and empower every person to create a permanent positive culture change in their school and community by starting a chain reaction of kindness and compassion. This parent and student leader meeting teaches the ‘how to’ and ensures that the positive impact will continue. This session is similar to the assembly program and ends with a specific challenge to parents and community leaders, showing them how they can reinforce the decisions their youth are making. Entertainers, politicians, sports celebrities, educators, and even two Presidents of the United States have been impacted by Rachel’s Challenge. However, students are the target audience and they have proven that they will respond with positive words, attitudes, and actions. Your school will never be the same after being exposed to Rachel’s Challenge.

SMART Program
We are excited to have the opportunity to participate in a new program offered by the University of Texas at Dallas through the Center for Brain Health. The Strategic Memory and Reasoning Training, or SMART program, teaches students strategies for organizing information and more efficient retrieval of that information. These skills will benefit students in all of their learning endeavors. This program is voluntary and will require parental permission, but we encourage all students to participate so they can learn these valuable skills.
The training will occur in core classes between September 9th and October 8th. A parent information meeting will be held during our Meet the Teacher night on Monday, August 30th, at 6:00.
Forms and a questionnaire from the Center for Brain Health will be available at the parent meeting and will passed out to 8th grade students during Marauder Time on Tuesday, August 31st. All students who return this packet with a parent signature by Friday, September 3rd, whether permission is granted or not, will receive a $5 gift card from the Center for Brain Health.

Walking to School
Walkers should cross Park Blvd. They can cross at Westgate Way with the crossing guard and at the bus lane in the afternoon only with the help of Mr. Blank when he's on duty. At no time should they cross anywhere along Park and they should never cross at the four way stop at Blocton and the entrance to the Davis and McMillan parking lots. They should walk from McMillan toward Davis using the front sidewalk by the buildings. They shouldn't be using the sidewalk adjacent to Park. Click here for details on getting to and from school.
Absent Work
Perhaps your child has missed school, and you are wondering
how to collect absent work. At McMillan Junior High, parents may request
work by contacting Lena Cunningham after their child has missed three or more
consecutive days of school. To pick-up your child's work (after 2:30
p.m.), parents must call before 9 a.m. and place a request with Lena
Cunningham.
Students who miss one or two days may collect work upon returning to school.
Examples:
Mary misses Monday, September 17th. She will collect her missed work from all classes when she returns September 18th.
Jerry misses Monday , September 17th and Tuesday, September 18th. He will collect his missed work from all classes when he returns September 19th.
Tim misses Monday, September 17th, Tuesday, September 18th and Wednesday
September 19th. A parent may call Lena Cunningham to place a request to collect the work from his teachers.
Students receive the number of days absent, plus one additional day to make-up any absent work.
