What is the School Resource Officer Program?
The School Resource Officer Program is not a response to increased crime,
drugs or violence at Wylie High School, but is a program to help maintain
the excellent standards of education and safety in the community.
This school-based program is aimed at reducing incidents of delinquency in
the community by combining law enforcement officers (School Resource Officers)
with education professionals to address drug and alcohol abuse, delinquency,
youth violence and other issues in an educational environment. The mission
of the SRO Program also attempts to enhance the relationship between law enforcement
officers and students in high school.
A School Resource Officer is assigned to Wylie High School on a daily basis
providing educational presentations and informal counseling.
What are some of the functions of a School Resource Officer?
School Resource Officers assume three primary functions or roles in the school
community:
INSTRUCTOR — School Resource Officers provide a variety of educational
opportunities to the school community through law related presentations to
students, faculty, and parents.
RESOURCE PROVIDER — School Resource Officers provide informal counseling
to students and parents. This counseling can range from mediation of student
problems to guiding students and parents to the appropriate resources.
POLICE OFFICER — School Resource Officers provide a positive law enforcement
presence in the school community and act as a positive role model for students.
Uniformed officers also present a deterrent to violence, drug use, gang activity,
vandalism and theft.
