History of Groves Elementary School

Groves Elementary was built during the 2001-2002 school year and was completed in the spring of 2002. Named after Wylie Citizen R.V. Groves, the building was dedicated in September 2002.

Dr. Jonathan Slaten is the first and only principal of Groves Elementary. Groves serves a diverse population with children who come from homes that speak many different languages. Groves Elementary has a wonderful mixture of students.

Groves Elementary was also the first school to house a bilingual program in the district. Groves was home to the bilingual program for three years. Although the bilingual program is now located at Tibbals Elementary Groves continues to have pre-kindergarten on campus.

Since Groves Elementary is still considered a new building it has not undergone any major renovations. A swingset was donated by PTA and added to the existing playground during the 2004-2005 school year. Summer of 2005 teachers and parent volunteers painted the office, teacher’s lounge, and teacher’s workroom to make Groves a warmer environment for staff and students.
