About Dr. Cheri Cox Cheri Cox Elementary is named in honor of Dr. Cheri Cox, a Wylie Independent School District educator from 1982-1993. Dr. Cox served as a counselor, an assistant principal and was named as principal of Hartman Elementary School in 1985. She served as principal until her retirement in June, 1993. Dr. Cox was known as a “teacher’s teacher” because of her commitment to children and always understanding the role of the teacher in the classroom as not only a teacher, but a constant advocate for the students. Dr. Cox passed away from a lengthy illness with cancer in July of 1993. Her legacy continued as an inspiration for all of the Wylie educators who had worked with her and known her for her courage and continued commitment to the Wylie students until her death. Dr. Cox’s family, her husband Michael and her two daughters, Caitlyn and Courtney, continue to reside in Wylie.
Dr. Cheri Cox received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Texas, a Master’s of Arts Degree from Southern Methodist University and her PhD degree from Texas Women’s University. She believed in students and the potential for them to become the best they could be. When promoted to principal at Hartman Elementary, Dr. Cox said, “While I have been at Hartman, I have come to admire the professionalism of the staff, the interest of the parents, and the enthusiasm of the students.” Dr. Cox was instrumental in helping Wylie ISD become the school district that it is today.
