2009 Bond Program

What is a bond election?

A bond election ask voters to authorize the sale of bonds by the district to financial institutions to fund construction projects and major purchases such as heating and cooling systems.  If the board of trustees later determines that the projects are no longer needed or must be delayed (due to slowing enrollment or economic changes), the bonds will not be sold.

When bonds are sold, it is usually over three to five years, which means bond projects will not begin until funding is available for them. The bonds are then paid back over an extended period of time similar to a home mortgage.

Why are we holding a bond election now?

For approximately six weeks in the summer of 2008, a diverse committee of more than 40 community members and district staff studied the changing growth patterns, land needs, renovation needs, equity issues, and build-out needs among other WISD concerns for the future.

A plan was presented to the Wylie ISD Board of Trustees with the recommendation to call a bond election and ask for $198 million.  After prioritizing the recommendations of the committee, the board voted to call a bond election to be held on November 4, 2008, in the amount of $98.3 M.

Even though 7,877 residents voted for the bond proposal, it did not pass.   The WISD Board of Trustees has reprioritized that proposal and reduced the overall amount from $98.3 M to $84.5 M.   Voters will be asked to approve an $84.5 M Bond Program on May 9, 2009.
